1. Cabinet approves over Rs 5,000 crore Telecom Development Plan for NE
i. The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for implementing a comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the North-Eastern Region. The proposal entails an estimated cost of over Rs 5,336 crore.
ii. The project will increase the reliability of district and state headquarters connectivity by providing alternative optical fiber connectivity.
iii. It will also ensure that notwithstanding any problem in one route, the voice and data transfer through other route will keep the district and state headquarters connected.
iv. This project is aimed to cover the remote villages in the region as also to keep seamless connectivity on national highways in the area.
2. Chandrakala Padia appointed as first women chairperson of IIAS
i. Chandrakala Padia was appointed as first women chairperson of Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS).
ii. She succeeded the former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
iii. Currently, she is working as Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Ganga Singh University in Bikaner.
iv. She was a visiting associate of IIAS. She was National Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies in 2003-04.
3. ICICI Bank offers Card less Cash Withdrawal at ATMs
i. Now, withdraw without a debit card at an ICICI Bank ATM, as the bank facilitates cardless cash withdrawal service with the help of a mobile number.
ii. ICICI Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, announced its ‘Cardless Cash Withdrawal’ service that allows its customers to transfer money from their account to anyone in India with a mobile number, the bank said in a statement.
iii. The recipient can withdraw money round the clock without using a debit card from over 10,000 ATMs of ICICI Bank across the country. One can do this even without having a bank account of any bank, the bank further said.
iv. However, the sender needs to be an ICICI Bank savings account holder.
4. India slips to 71st rank in global competitiveness list
i. India has slipped to 71st position, in an annual global competitiveness list, where Switzerland remains on top.
ii. As per the list, released by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, India comes the lowest among BRICS countries.
iii. The Global Competitiveness Report 2014-15, says Switzerland is the most competitive economy, followed by Singapore and United States.
iii. China, which has improved its position by one place to 28th spot, leads the BRICS grouping.
