1.    Grand old lady of Bollywood Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102

i. Family and friends bid farewell to veteran actress Zohra Sehgal, who was cremated in New Delhi on Friday.
ii. The last rites of the 102-year-old actress, who died yesterday, were performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium by her son Pawan in the presence of her daughter Kiran and grandchildren.
iii. Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, theatre personality MK Raina and Prasar Bharti CEO Jawahar Sircar were among those who turned up to pay their last respect.
iv. Sehgal had a great innings as an artiste, performer and actor that spanned more than seven decades. She started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935. She had appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films besides television series and plays.
v. Often called the grand old lady of Bollywood, she last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007. She worked with some of the biggest stars of this era be it Amitabh Bachchan in "Cheeni Kum", Shah Rukh Khan in "Dil Se" or Salman in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam".
vi. A Padma Shri awardee, she also received the Padma Vibhshan in 2010.

2.    India votes in support of UNHRC resolution on Gaza

i. India along with BRICS countries on Wednesday voted in support of a UN Human Rights Council resolution to launch a probe into Israel’s offensive on Gaza.
ii. India joined Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa to vote for a Palestinian-drafted resolution on “Ensuring Respect for international law in The Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jersusalem”.
iii. In the 47-member council, 29 countries voted in support of the resolution while 17 nations abstained.
iv. The U.S. was the only nation to vote against the resolution. European countries abstained.
v. The voting came as bloodbath in the Gaza Strip continued unabated today with Israel and Hamas refusing to back down in the 16-day conflict that has killed over 680 Palestinians and 31 Israelis.
vi. Earlier, India asked Israel and Palestine to demonstrate political will to agree to a ceasefire and return to the negotiating table.

3.    Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar Retired from His Office

i. The Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar retired from his office on 31 July 2013. He served to the police force for 37 years. His tenure as the Delhi Police commissioner was 13 months. He will be succeeded by Bhim Sain Bassi.
ii. Neeraj Kumar is a 1976 batch IPS officer of the AGMU cadre.
iii. He succeeded BK Gupta as the Deli Police Commissioner on 1 July 2012.
iv. He was the Director General (Prisons) and in charge of Tihar Jail.
v. He had served almost all the branches of police, such as the Prisons, CBI, Traffic, districts, Special Cell as well as Crime Branch.
vi. He is originally from the state of Bihar.
vii.  He received the MSc degree from St Stephen's College in the year 1975.
viii.  However, Neeraj Kumar and his police force were praised for exposing the scam of spot fixing in Indian Premier League (IPL).


4.    World Photography Day Celebrated Across the Globe

i. The French government announced 19 August as the World Photography Day.
ii. The World Photography Day originated from invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process which was developed by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre.
iii. In the year 2009, Korske Ara, a passionate Australian photographer launched the World Photography Day Project.
iv. On 19 August 2010, the first global online gallery of World Photography Day was hosted. The day is celebrated in order to unite global as well as local communities of the photographers.
