1. Al Sissi set to be elected as Egypt's new President
i. In Egypt, former Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah Al Sissi is all set to be elected as the new President of the country.
ii. The preliminary results after counting of votes have shown that Al Sissi is heading for a landslide victory.
iii. Sissi’s campaign quoting judicial sources engaged in the counting of votes said that he has got 93 percent votes.
iv. His rival Hamdeen Sabbahi is reported to have secured only 2.9 percent votes. Although the results are announced by the Judges supervising polling centres across the country, they are still considered unofficial as they must be verified and then announced by the Presidential Elections Commission.
v. The Presidential election in Egypt this time was marked by a low voter turnout of around 44 percent even though the polling was extended by one more day. Pro Morsi Islamist alliance led by Muslim Brotherhood boycotted these polls.
vi. This was the second Presidential election in three years in Egypt. For the first time in the history of Egypt, elections were monitored by foreign observers from European Union.
2. Sumitra Mahajan to be New Lok Sabha Speaker
i. BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan will be the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha with senior leaders from all parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, moving motions on Thursday proposing her name for the high office.
ii. Ms. Mahajan’s was the only name that was proposed as the time for filing nomination for the post came to a close at noon on Thursday. The formal election will take place on Friday.
iii. The 72-year-old Ms. Mahajan is an eight-term Lok Sabha member from Indore and has worked for long in the panel of Chairperson of the House.
iv. Ms. Mahajan, lovingly called ‘Tai’, is known for her amicable nature and has her friends and admirers in all parties
3. Rajeev Suri is Nokia New CEO
i. Finnish firm Nokia, which recently sold its mobile unit to Microsoft, has appointed Rajeev Suri as the company's new CEO and President.
ii. Mr. Suri joined Nokia in 1995 and has held a wide range of leadership positions in the company. Since October of 2009, he has served as CEO of NSN, the former joint venture between Nokia and Siemens that is now fully owned by Nokia.
iii. Risto Siilasmaa, who has been serving as the interim CEO, will now return to his role as Chairman of Nokia's Board.
Note: Nokia finalized the 5.4 billion euro ($7.5 billion) sale of its struggling mobile phone business to Microsoft on Friday.
4. First phase of Lok Sabha elections begins
i. The battle lines have been drawn for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in five seats in Assam on Monday.
ii. Five constituencies in Assam — Tezpur, Kaliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur — and Tripura (West) in Tripura will go to the polls on Monday.
iii. Campaigning has already ended in these constituencies and the candidates have mounted door-to-door contact with the electorate, seeking their votes.
iv. The Congress, BJP, Trinamool Congress, AIUDF, AGP, AAP, SUCI, CPI (M), AIFB and SP are contesting five seats in Tezpur, Koliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur in the Congress-ruled State.
v. Among the 51 candidates are Union Ministers Ranee Narah and Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union Minister and sitting MLA Bijoy Krishna Handique, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gourav Gogoi and Bhupen Kumar Bora for the Congress.
