1.    International Youth Day today

i. International Youth Day is being observed today across the globe.
ii. The theme this year is-- Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward.
iii. The United Nations has designated the awareness day to be observed on 12th August every year.
iv. To optimally tap youth's constructive and creative energies,the government is implementing a large number of schemes and programmes in the area of education, skill development, labour and employment and sports.
v. The Youth and Sports Ministry through its popular programme, the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan is developing a vast network of youth clubs and volunteers who undertake a number of activities for rural youth at the grassroot levels.
vi. The Ministry also endeavors to facilitate youth with a conducive environment and tools that will enable them to make the most of their natural potential to realize their aspirations.

2.    Nation celebrates Gurpurab

i. Sikhs from across the world are celebrating the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Today.
ii Guru Gobind Singh,the 10th guru of Sikhs was born on this day in 1666 at Patna in Bihar. daily
iii. People in large number are visiting Gurudwaras to participate in the programmes being organised to celebrate 348th birthday of Guru ji.
iv. Bhog of Akhandpath were performed today in the Gurudwaras and continuous recitation of Gurbani is going on. Special seminars are being organised today to tell the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh to the young generation.

3.    Sachin & Prof C N R Rao to get Bharat Ratna on February 4

i. President Pranab Mukherjee will confer cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist Prof C N R Rao with Bharat Ratna on February 4 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
ii. A formal ceremony, which is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
iii. The Little Master was given the honour hours after he played his 200th and last Test against the touring West Indies in November last year.
iv. Tendulkar (40) and Rao (89), both of whom are recipients of Padma Vibhushan–the country’s second highest civilian honour, join the list of 41 eminent personalities to get the award given in recognition of exceptional service of the highest order.

Note: i. Tendulkar is the first sportsman and the youngest recipient of the the Bharat Ratna. Besides Tendulkar, Rao will also be presented with the award.
ii. Prof Rao is a well recognized international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. The 89-year-old has published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books. His contributions have been recognized by most major scientific academies around the world through conferment of memberships and fellowships, and has been honoured with several national and international awards.
iii. Sachin Tendulkar and Prof Rao join the list of 41 eminent personalities to get the Bharat Ratna.

4.    Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan likely to take over as next Navy Chief 

i. Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan is most likely to be the next chief of the Indian Navy with reports on Wednesday suggesting that the Defence Ministry has recommended his name to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the coveted post.

ii. The post of Navy chief has been lying vacant for nearly two months since DK Joshi suddenly quit in the wake of a series of mishaps that hit the naval forces recently.
iii. Vice Admiral Dhowan, who has been the acting Navy chief since Joshi's exit, was in contention for the top job along with Western Navy Commander Shekhar Sinha and Eastern Commander Anil Chopra.
iv. Vice Admiral Sinha is the senior-most among the three but he has been edged out of the race, apparently because majority of the 14 mishaps, including two major submarine accidents, took place under his command during the last 10 months.
v. "The Defence Ministry has recommended the name of acting chief Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan for the appointment and the Prime Minister's Office will go through the file before taking a final decision on the matter," top government sources said
