1.    Sowjanya Bavisetti wins ITF Women's Tennis Tournament

i. Sowjanya Bavisetti of India has emerged winner in the 10,000 dollar Internalional Tennis Federation (ITF) Women's Tennis Tournament in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
ii. The unseeded Indian yesterday defeated Anastasia Kharchenko of Ukraine, who was seeded third, in straight sets. Little known Sowjanya had an easy going in the first set which she won by dropping just one game (6-1) in the singles final.
iii. The Ukrainian player raised her game made Sowjanya to fight for every point. With six-all the deadlock was resolved in tie-breaker and the Indian player managed to win at 7-6 (1).

2.    Govt to launch scheme for Muslim adult education soon

i. Union HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju has said that government is soon going to launch an adult education scheme for Muslims above the age of 15 years.
ii. The scheme with a corpus of 600 crore rupees will ensure attainment of functional literacy by 1 crore muslim adults
iii. The scheme initially will be launched in 16 to 17 muslim concentrated districts across the country.
iv. Apart from this a new scheme for skill development among minorities girls is proposed on the lines of HUNAR at the outlay of Rs 978 crores. It will benefit 9.2 lakh minorities girls.


3.    Arun Gupta appointed as CMD of Shipping Corporation of India

i. Arun Kumar Gupta took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) by the Union Government on 28 January 2014. The post was vacant for over a year after the retirement of S Hajara.
ii. Before this elevation to the post, Arun Gupta was the director of offshore services at the Mumbai-headquartered shipping line. Since retirement of S Hajara in December 2012, the Shipping Corporation of India has been without a full time head and has reported a net loss of 114.31 crore rupees in last fiscal.
iii. BK Mandal, the director finance of SCI has been acting as a CMD since the retirement of Hajara.

4.    SBI launches new scheme for fashion boutique owners

i. The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched a financing scheme for women fashion boutique owners.
ii. Labelled ‘boutique financing’, the scheme is designed to offer working capital expenses as well as term loan for boutique owners.
iii. Chief General Manager of SBI (Bengal Circle) Sunil Srivastava said the bank has identified the growth potential of the segment.He said the bank would give loans at a concessional interest rate and the maximum loan to be made available would be Rs 50 lakh for a period of seven years.
iv. Owners would also get overdraft facilities, he added.
