1.    World Diabetes Day observed on 14 November

i. World Diabetes Day was observed on 14 November 2013 across the world to raise awareness of diabetes.
ii. The theme for 2009-13 is Education and Prevention.
iii. World Diabetes Day is an annual campaign, led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.
iv. The world Diabetes day is celebrated every year on 14 November. The date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921.


2.    Delhi: record turnout of 65.13 per cent registered in Assembly polls

i. Breaking all records, Delhi registered the highest-ever voter turnout of 65.13 per cent in the Assembly polls with men and women coming out in almost equal numbers to exercise their franchise, Delhi's Election Commission said today.

ii. In 2008 Assembly polls, the overall voting percentage was 57.58 while in 1993, it was 61.75 per cent. Out of 1.19 crore eligible voters, over 77.7 lakh people exercised their franchise yesterday. The number of first-time eligible voters is 4.05 lakh.
iii. Creating history, 65.48 per cent men and 64.68 women cast their ballot in the three-cornered contest among Congress, BJP and debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
iv. The highest turnout was recorded in the Seemapuri seat (72.19 per cent), while the lowest polling was in Ballimaran with 56.20 per cent.
v. A total of 810 candidates are in the fray. Counting of votes is scheduled to take place on December 8.


3.    Ila Patnaik appointed as Principal Economic Advisor

i. Centre has appointed columnist and RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Ila Patnaik, as Principal Economic Advisor, a post that had been vacant since November 2013.
ii. The appointment assumes significance as Dr. Patnaik has in her columns by-and-large concurred with Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan’s policy stances. “
iii. The most important factor that favours success this time is Governor Raghuram Rajan,” Dr. Patnaik wrote days after Dr. Rajan’s appointment in a column on an RBI proposal about interest rate futures.
iv. More recently, in April she wrote: “His strategy of an aggressive attack on inflation, despite the scepticism often voiced in the Indian monetary policy debate about the effectiveness of monetary policy, was the right strategy and is yielding results.”
v. Ms. Patnaik did her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Surrey, Guildford, U.K.


4.    Gabriela Isler Won Miss Universe 2013

i. Gabriela Isler from Venezuela won Miss Universe 2013 contest on 9 November 2013 held at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. Patricia Yurena Rodriguez from Spain finished as the first runner-up, whereas Constanza Baez from Ecuador was the second runner up.

ii. Manasi Moghe from India had been shortlisted for the top 10 finalists of Miss Universe 2013 but failed to win the crown. Miss Universe is the oldest International beauty pageant.
iii. The top 10 finalists comprised India, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Ukraine, Ecuador, USA, Brazil, Great Britain, Spain and Philippines. Top 5 finalists included Ecuador, Spain, Brazil, Philippines, Venezuela.
iv. María Gabriela Isler was born on 21 April 1988 in Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela. She is a Venezuelan fashion model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Venezuela 2012. She is the third Miss Universe from Venezuela in 6 years.
