1. Children's Day Observed Across India on 14 November
i. Children's Day was celebrated in India on 14 November 2013 in order to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of India after Independence.
ii. The day is celebrated to commemorate the affection of Jawaharlal Nehru towards children.
2. India to set up HVDC transmission line with Nepal, Bhutan
i. India is working to set up an energy efficient power transmission line (HVDC) with Nepal and Bhutan as part of its energy security plans, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said.
ii. India also hopes to have power transmission connectivity with ASEAN and SAARC countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan and Myanmar, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said on Thursday while addressing the World Energy Policy Summit 2013 in New Delhi.
iii. India has been working for the last few years to put in place a multilateral SAARC Market for Electricity (SAME) and has plans to set up a larger SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) transmission grid.
iv. In October, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had dedicated to the nation the 71-km Baharampur-Bheramara HVDC transmission link, which connected electricity grids of India and Bangladesh.
v. As far as Bhutan is concerned, India's transmission link with that country is already in place.
3. Justice G Rohini becomes first woman Chief Justice of Delhi HC
i. Justice G Rohini has taken over as the first woman Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.
ii. She was administered the oath of office by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in New Delhi today.
iii. Before being elevated as Chief Justice, Justice Rohini was the senior most judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. With her joining, the strength of women judges at the Delhi High Court has increased to 10.
iv. Born in 1955, Justice Rohini studied at Osmania University in Hyderabad and then at the College of Law under Andhra University in Visakhapatnam.
v. She was enrolled as an advocate in December 1980 and later became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Bar Council.
vi. She was appointed a government pleader in the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995 and became additional judge in 2001 and permanent judge in 2002.
4. SC Stays Gauhati HC verdict terming CBI as 'unconstitutional'
i. In a huge relief to the Centre and the CBI, the Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the Gauhati High court verdict declaring the agency as "unconstitutional", saying accused in "sensational cases" have sought halting of the criminal proceedings based on that judgement.
ii. The apex court relief came on an urgent petition filed by the Department of Personnel and Training, the nodal ministry for CBI, from a bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, which heard the appeal at an extraordinary hearing in his residence.
iii. "In the meantime, there shall be a stay of operation of the final judgement and the impugned order dated November 6, 2013 passed by the Gauhati High Court," said the bench also comprising Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
iv. It rejected the objections raised by the counsel for Navendra Kumar, on whose petition the High Court had passed the verdict, that DoPT was not authorised to file the Special Leave Petition as it was not a party in the High Court.
