1.  INS Vikramaditya set to join Indian Navy on Nov. 16

i. Defence Minister A.K. Antony will induct the long-delayed aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, designed to boost India’s maritime capabilities, at a shipyard in Russia on Saturday.
ii. Contracted for in 2004, during the NDA regime, the vessel has been delayed by over five years and has seen several time and cost-overruns in the last nine years.
iii. The ship is powered by eight boilers and can achieve top speeds of 30 knots per hour.
Note: INS Vikramaditya is a Kiev class aircraft carrier which was commissioned by Russian Navy in 1987 under the name Baku.



2.  Sports federations should be headed by sports persons not by businessmen: SC

i. The Supreme Court on Thursday blamed the administrators for the poor state of the national game, hockey, in the country.
ii. The court stated that the sports bodies should be headed by sports persons and not by businessmen. It also mentioned that politics has taken hockey into abysmal low.
iii. Deteriorating condition of the national game is a matter of concern. India used to win gold medals earlier but not now, stated the apex court.
iv. It is to be noted that politics has been deeply rooted in Hockey for a long time now. The tussle between Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Hockey India (HI) fighting for claiming sole power over hockey is well known.
v. Hockey India had approached the apex court 2 years ago and it was during the hearing of this case on Thursday that the court made this observation.


3.  Stanislas Wawrinka beat Roger Federer to bag Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title

i. Stanislas Wawrinka has defeated former world number one Roger Federer to bag the Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title.
ii. In the all Swiss finals last evening, third seed Wawrinka beat Federer, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 to win his maiden Monte Carlo title.
iii. America's top seeded Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, won the Doubles trophy, beating the third seeded Croatian-Brazilian team of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.


4.  Focus on S-E Asia at Kolkata film festival

i. The 19th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) was inaugurated on Sunday. The eight-day festival will screen 189 films from 63 countries.
ii. KIFF, an accredited film festival of the International Federation of Film Producers Association, Paris (FIAPF), screened renowned director Rituparno Ghosh’s Taak Jhaank (Sunglass) as the inaugural film. Eight of Ghosh’s films, including Unishe April, Dahan, The Last Lear and Chitrangada, would be screened as a special tribute during the festival.
iii. Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan inaugurated the festival along with Shah Rukh Khan, Kamal Haasan and other eminent actors. Bachchan recalled Bengal’s contribution to Indian cinema and described how Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas “fired the imagination” of Indian filmmakers “time and again”.
iv. This year’s festival will focus on South-East Asian movies, she said.
v. In memory of legendary singer Manna Dey, who passed away last month, the festival’s theme song featured lyrics from his popular Bengali film Jibone Ki Paabo Na.
