1. Army launches coaching programme for J&K youth to crack IIT-JEE
i. The Army has launched a coaching programme for the students of Chenab Valley belt in Jammu and Kashmir to help them crack the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE).
ii. A senior Army official said that the Centre for Social Responsibility & Leadership (CSRL) in association with Army's Delta Force has launched Chenab Super-30 programme to provide eleven months free residential coaching for clearing the IIT-JEE to the talented youth of Chenab Valley.
iii. The proposal has drawn overwhelming response from students in the three Chenab Valley districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban.
iv. The programme got an overwhelming response from the students, especially girls, the army officer said.
2. SC Suggests Gavaskar as BCCI President
i. In a big setback BCCI President N Srinivasan, the Supreme Court today proposed his replacement by Sunil Gavaskar and suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) along with Rajasthan Royals (RR) from IPL 7 till the pendency of case of betting and spot fixing scandal before it.
ii. The court said it is intending to bar CSK, owned by India Cements, which is promoted by Srinivasan, and RR, whose players and team officials are allegedly involved in the scandal, from participating in the IPL 7 tournament slated to begin from April 16.
iii. A bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik proposed the name of veteran cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar to head the Board during the pendency of the case in the apex court.
iv. The bench asked the Board to give its response by tomorrow on its proposals after which it will pass an interim order.
v. The bench also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of BCCI after senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for Cricket Association of Bihar, pointed out that many such officials are at present part of BCCI team.
3. Airtel names new CTO
i. Bharti Airtel has appointed Abhay Savargaonkar as its Chief Technology Officer for India operations. He will also be on the company's managing board.
ii. Abhay has been at Airtel for over a decade and is currently the Chief of Network Operations. He has held various senior leadership roles covering all network verticals, including leading the 3G planning and deployment, quality, network planning and being the CTO of mobile business when it was a standalone business.
iii. The new CTO comes in a time when telecom companies are looking at deploying multiple technologies to meet the challenges of offering data services.
4. World Trade to grow by 4.7 percent in 2014: WTO
i. World Trade Organisation (WTO) on 14 April 2014 projected that the world trade will grow by 4.7 percent in 2014.
ii. It also projected that the growth in 2015 will slightly be faster at 5.3 percent, which is 20 year average growth rate.
iii. The growth percent of 2014 is more than double of what was achieved in 2013 (2.2 percent). In 2013, the trade growth rate was slow due to a combination of flat import demand in developed economies and moderate import growth in developing economies. On the export side, both developed and developing economies only managed to record small, positive increase.
