1.  ISRO aborts GSLV-D5 launch after fuel leak

i. The Indian space agency Monday called off the launch of its heavy rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D5) due to leak in the second-stage engine.
ii. The Chairman of ISRO Mr.Radhakrishnan said that launch was called off as leakages were noticed during the process of the second propellant stage.
iii. Mr.Radhakrishnan told that immediate action will be taken to drain out the liquid fuels inside the vehicle.
iv. This will be the second attempt by Indian Space Research Organisation to flight test the indigenous cryogenic stage after the failure of previous missions of GSLV-D3 on 15th April 2010.
v. The next GSLV flight with a Russian cryogenic stage also failed in December 2010.
vi. After the unsuccessful launch in April 2010, the failure analysis committee had concluded that the thrust build up did not progress as expected due to non-availability of liquid hydrogen supply to the thrust chamber of the main engine.
vii. In the last three years, ISRO conducted extensive failure analysis studies and reviews. Cryo stage FBTP was modified as per GSLV-D3 failure analysis committee recommendations and qualification tests carried out.



2.  Under-pressure India leaves for Asia Cup

i. Well aware that it is its last chance to qualify for next year’s World Cup, the Indian men’s hockey team on Friday left for Ipoh, Malaysia to participate in the eight-nation Asia Cup to be held from August 24 to September 1.
ii. Plagued by injuries, India was forced to field a young 18-member squad under inspirational Sardar Singh for the Asia Cup.
iii. With four key strikers — Danish Mujtaba, S.V. Sunil, Gurwinder Singh Chandi and Akashdeep Singh — ruled out of the tournament due to injuries, India’s forwardline is in shambles.
iv. The list of injuries has made India’s road much tougher in the Asia Cup, a tournament which it needs to win to qualify for 2014 World Cup at The Hague, Netherlands.
v. India is placed in Pool B alongside Korea, Bangladesh and Oman while Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan and Chinese-Taipei complete the Pool A line-up.


3.  India thrash Zimbabwe by 9 wickets

i. India continued their dominance over Zimbabwe as they thrashed the hosts by 9 wickets in the fourth ODI of the five-match series at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.
ii. Chasing a meagre target of 145, openers Rohit Sharma (64*) and Suresh Raina (65*) both slammed half-century each to secure another massive win for India.
iii. Earlier, India continued their dominance in the series as they dismissed Zimbabwe for a paltry total.
iv. With the series already in their pocket after having won the first three games quite comfortably, India made two changes in their playing eleven today, handing out debuts to Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohit in place of Shikhar Dhawan and R Vinay Kumar.


4.    Doordarshan's Naad Bhed-The Mystery of Sound to be featured in Limca Book of Records

i. The classical music reality show of Doordarshan Naad Bhed-The Mystery of Sound will be featured in Limca Book of Records. This was revealed through a statement issued by Doordarshan on 21 July 2014.
ii. The reality show will be featured under Television Chapter in Limca Book of Records for being the first ever National level reality show on Classical Music.

i. Naad Bhed – the Mystery of Sound, a national-level classical music reality show, aims at promoting and popularising Indian classical music and rewarding the best young practitioners of classical music.
ii. The central idea of the show was to earn respect for the rich Indian heritage of classical music.
iii. Naad Bhed was produced by the Doordarshan and an NGO,the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY).
