1.    Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde passes away

i. Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde died in a road accident in Delhi on Tuesday morning. Soon after the accident at around 6.20 am, Mr. Munde was rushed to the AIIMS.
ii. According to the post-mortem report, the Union Minister had no spontaneous breathing, pulse, BP, and cardiac activitiy. CPR was given for 50 minutes. However, he was declared dead at 7.20 am.
iii. Mr. Munde, a senior politician from Maharashtra, was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister for Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation and Rural Development on May 26.
iv. He was also till recently in the reckoning for the position of Maharashtra Chief Minister.
v. Mr. Munde was the brother-in-law of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan. Born on December 12, 1949 in Bheed, Mr. Munde came from a family of farmers and during his college days was drawn to the students' movement.
v. Mr. Munde was a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for five terms during 1980-1985 and 1990-2009. He was also the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during 1992-1995. He has held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1995-1999. He was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014, and served as the Deputy Leader of the BJP in the Lok Sabha.
vi. Mr. Munde won the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Beed Constituency by a margin of 2 lakh, defeating NCP's Suresh Dhas.

2.    CCEA approves implementation of agri schemes in 12th Plan

i. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved implementation of various schemes related to agriculture, including continuation of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), in the 12th Plan with a combined outlay of over Rs 80,000 crore.
ii. The RKVY is a State plan scheme that provides 'considerable flexibility' and autonomy to states in planning and executing programmes for incentivising investment in agriculture and allied sectors.
iii. During the 11th Plan, states have taken up 5,768 projects across the entire spectrum, such as crop development, horticulture, agricultural mechanisation, marketing and post-harvest management, an official statement said.
iv. The CCEA has also approved the implementation of the central sector integrated scheme on agricultural cooperation with an outlay of Rs 920.088 crore during the 12th plan period (2012-13 to 2016-17).
v. Alongwith these two schemes, the CCEA also approved Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) for implementation during the 12th Plan with an outlay of Rs 16,840 crore.
vi. The mission has been approved for achieving the growth rate of 7.2 percent in the horticulture sector during the 12th Plan, the statement added.
vii. The CCEA also approved the integrated Scheme on Agriculture Census, Economics and Statistics" with some modifications. The total plan outlay will be Rs 1091 crore during 12th Plan, it added.


3.    US Congressman Crowley honoured by Indian-Americans 

i. Indian-Americans here have honoured US Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley for his work for the community, particularly his efforts in getting the FBI to track hate crimes against Sikhs and Hindus.
ii. Crowley, who serves as the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans in the US House of Representatives, said it is "high time" that India becomes a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
iii. Crowley, the Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, was honoured on January 30 by the Jackson Heights and broader Queens Indian American community for his efforts on behalf of Sikh-Americans and the broader Indian American community.
iv. Nearly 100 Sikh and Indian-American community members and leaders from New York attended the event last week.
v. Crowley is the eight-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx, which has a substantial population of Indians.


4.    Olympian, WW II veteran Zamperini passes away

i. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner and American World War II veteran who survived two years as a prisoner of war, has died at the age of 97.
ii. He died peacefully on Wednesday after a 40-day battle with pneumonia. Zamperini's life was the subject of the 2010 book Unbroken and an upcoming film adaption to be released this year.
