1. Maryland became the First southern US state to Abolish Death Penalty
i. Maryland, the U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, on 2 May 2013 became the first southern US state to abolish the death penalty.
ii. The measure on it was signed by Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley on 2 May 2013.
iii. The person who was attended was former Maryland death row inmate Kirk Bloodsworth.
iv. He will be the first person in the country freed from death penalty because of DNA evidence after being convicted in a death penalty case.
v. On the global level, Maryland is the 18th state to abolish the death penalty.
2. India in 2nd position in ICC Test team rankings
i. India have retained their second position in the ICC Test team rankings following a draw in the second and final Test today against New Zealand, which won the series 1-Nil.
ii. Australia are currently leading South Africa 1-0 in the three-Test series, and they need minimum of a draw in the series to move ahead of India.
iii. However, South Africa are already guaranteed with the number-one position at cut-off date.
3. British visas now only through e-payment
i. Indians seeking British visa will have to pay the visa fees online through debit or credit cards or via e-wallet.
ii. The other modes of payments including cash or demand draft will be discontinued from 16th of this month.
iii. Britain's Immigration Regional Director for Central and South Asia Thomas Greig said the new initiative has been taken as part of efforts to streamline the visa application process and make it consistent with the wider global trend.
iv. He said the new initiative will help cut costs in the management of visa operations which in turn will help to keep visa fees down
4. India became third largest crude oil importer in the World
i. India overtook Japan to become the third largest crude oil importer in the World. As per the data released by Reuters on 30 January 2014, India imported 3.86 million barrels-per-day of crude oil in the year 2013.
ii. India's crude oil imports were nearly 6 percent higher than Japan's customs-cleared imports of 3648372 barrels-per-day (211716710 kilolitres).
