1.    ATP chairman Brad Drewett died

i. 54 years old Brad Drewett, the former tour player who led the ATP as executive chairman and president since January 2012 died on 3 May 2013 after battling with motor neuron disease.
ii. It was Brad Drewett, who helped in increasing the prize money at Grand Slam tournaments.
About Brad Drewett
i. Brad Drewett was a top-40 singles and top-20 doubles player before he retired in 1990.
ii. He was hired in 2006 to lead operations in the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific regions. He led the ATP since January 2012.
iii. Drewett won two singles titles in the early 1980s during his playing career. He also rose to No.34 in the world rankings.
iv. He had worked as a commentator for two Australian television broadcasters.

2.    NZ win 2-Cricket Test series against India 1-0 as 2nd Test at Wellington ends in draw

i. New Zealand have won the two match Test Series against India 1-Nil, with the Wellington Test ending in a draw. Resuming the final day today at the overnight score of 571 for 6, the hosts declared their second innings at 680 for 8, giving India an improbable 435 runs to chase in little over two sessions of play.
ii. Earlier, New Zealand Skipper, Brendon McCullum created history by becoming the first Kiwi to score a triple hundred. McCullum struck a historic 302, while debutant James Neesham scored an unbeaten 137. Given 67 overs to survive, India were in strife as they lost their third wicket with just 54 on board.
iii. ollowing which Virat Kohli entered and scored his 6th century to make sure India didn't lose the Test. The match ended in a draw, with India scoring 166 for 3 at stumps on the final day.
iv. McCullum was adjudged man of the match.


3.    Karnataka Assembly Passed Essential Services Maintenance (ESMA) Bill 2013 

i. The Karnataka state assembly on 4 December 2013 passed the Karnataka Essential Services Maintenance (ESMA) Bill 2013.
ii. According to the new bill, striking work will be a non-bailable offence and police can arrest a striking employee without warrant. The Bill, popularly known as ESMA, is to put an end to employees working in water, power, health, transport and service sectors going on strikes, inconveniencing people.
iii. As per the ESMA Bill 2013, the definition of essential services includes any service connected with the production, generation, storage, transmission, supply or distribution of water or electricity and any transportation service for the carriage of passengers or goods by motor vehicle
iv. The new legislation gives government the power to declare even those services that the State has powers to make laws for under List II of the 7th Schedule of the Constitution, as essential services.
 Note: The last time the state government invoked ESMA was in 1996 when KSRTC employees went on strike. But the law lapsed in 2004.


4.    Arun Gupta appointed as CMD of Shipping Corporation of India

i. Arun Kumar Gupta took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) by the Union Government on 28 January 2014. The post was vacant for over a year after the retirement of S Hajara.
ii. Before this elevation to the post, Arun Gupta was the director of offshore services at the Mumbai-headquartered shipping line. Since retirement of S Hajara in December 2012, the Shipping Corporation of India has been without a full time head and has reported a net loss of 114.31 crore rupees in last fiscal.
iii. BK Mandal, the director finance of SCI has been acting as a CMD since the retirement of Hajara.
