1. Hosni Mubarak sentenced to three years in jail
i. An Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced ousted president Hosni Mubarak to three years in prison after finding the 86-year-old leader guilty of embezzling public funds, three years after he was toppled following a popular uprising.
ii. His two sons, 53-year-old Alaa Mubarak and 50-year-old Gamal Mubarak - were also convicted and given four-year terms for embezzling USD 17.9 million of funds earmarked for the renovation of presidential palaces.
iii. The trio was also fined USD 17.6 million and ordered to reimburse USD 2.9 million to the state treasury. Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for three decades, is also facing trial for abuse of power and conspiring in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that forced him to quit.
iv. He was found guilty of the charge relating to the protesters in 2012 along with his former Interior Minister,
v. Habib al-Adly, and sentenced to life in prison. But in January 2013 a court upheld an appeal by them against their convictions and ordered a retrial.
2. Indian-origin student Gopal Rao wins UK Twitter prize
i. An Indian-origin MBA student at the University of Cambridge has won accolades from British Foreign Secretary William Hague after winning a Twitter competition which asked a question regarding UK's foreign policy.
ii. Hague had asked his followers on Twitter to tweet the answer to a question: "What do you think is the biggest contribution UK foreign policy can make to the world?"
iii. The winning entry was from Gopal Rao, who answered: "UK foreign policy should focus on emancipation of #girlsandwomen through enterprise, supported by vibrant #socent culture within UK. #meetFS."
iv. The prize was to meet the Foreign Secretary and live tweet an event, according to a statement by The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
3. Anand Mahindra, Banmali Agrawala appointed to USIBC Board
i. Anand Mahindra, Ellen Lord and Banmali Agrawal were on Friday appointed as board members of the US India Business Council (USIBC).
ii. While Mahindra is chairman & managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra, Ellen Lord is president & CEO of Extron Systems and Banmali Agrawala is president & CEO, South Asia, General Electric.
iii. Anand Mahindra, Ellen Lord and Banmali Agrawala bring an excellent combination of both business and civic leadership experience to this position," said USIBC chairman and MasterCard President and CEO Ajay Banga.
iv. In 1991, Mahindra was appointed deputy Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra, India's leading producer of tractors and off-road vehicles.
v. Agrawala is the president & CEO for GE South Asia and is responsible for all of GE's operations in the region. A veteran in the energy domain, Banmali has over 29 years of global experience.
4. Ogilvy bags YoungGun awards
i. Ogilvy Mumbai has won two YoungGun awards in the YGA 2013 Awards.
ii. The agency is the only office in India to have won YoungGuns awards. YGA is now in its 12th year of recognising young talent globally.
iii. The agency’s CleftToSmile logo won the award in the general graphic design category. For their second award, the agency had rolled out a unique campaign for Akanksha, a non-government organisation, which needed teachers, but did not have funds for advertising.
