1. Sardar Singh Named as the Captain of the Asia Cup Hockey Tournament 2013
i. India, on 11 August 2013 named Sardar Singh as the captain of the 18-member squad in the Asia Cup hockey tournament, which is scheduled to take place from 24 August 2013 to 1 September 2013 in Ipoh, Malaysia.
ii. The forwardline of the team does not include Danish Mujtaba, S V Sunil,Gurwinder Singh Chandi and Akashdeep Singh because of their injuries.
iii. The inexperienced players have been included instead in the 5-member forwardline, which also has two new players- Ramandeep Singh and Nikin Thimmaiah.
iv. The three-day selection trials of the team were held at the SAI Centre in Bangalore from 25 July 2013 to 27 July 2013.
v. The Asia Cup hockey tournament Indian team will leave for Ipoh on 16 August 2013. India will play in the tournament in Pool B.
2. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas begins
i. Engaging with the youth and discussions on healthcare will be key focus areas of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014 which kicked off in New Delhi on Tuesday.
ii. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari highlighted the aim of creation of Ministry of Overseas Indians.
iii. The Minister said that the Pravasi Bharatiya Platform should be more broadbased and expanded.
iv. This year's theme is "Engaging Diaspora: Connecting Across Generations" and the Youth PBD is expected to open new horizons of a strong network of young overseas Indians to contribute to India's engagement with youth in all sectors.
3. Vijay Bahuguna resigns as Uttarakhand CM, Harish Rawat set to take over
i. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna visited the Rajbhavan in Dehradun and submitted his resignation letter to the Governor Aziz Qureshi on Friday. Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat is all set to become Bahuguna’s successor in the state.
ii. Bahuguna, who was under fire for poor handling of relief work after last year’s flash floods, handed over his resignation to Governor Aziz Qureshi at Raj Bhawan in Dehradun.
iii. The decision to replace Bahuguna was reportedly taken at a meeting between Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and senior party leaders on Wednesday.
iv. Rawat is scheduled to reach Dehradun on Friday. Congress sources said it was believed that Rawat would galvanise the party workers and boost the party’s prospects in the general elections.
v. Currently an MP from Haridwar parliamentary seat, Rawat also served as state party president when ND Tiwari was chief minister between 2002 and 2007.
vi. After the 2012 Uttarakhand assembly polls, Bahuguna was said to be the Congress high command’s “favourite choice” for the chief minister’s post.
vii. He is the son of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister HN Bahuguna, and his sister and party spokesperson Rita Bahuguna Joshi is also said to be on good terms with the party’s central leadership.
4. Srinivasan’s name in Mudgal report; can’t discharge any duty in BCCI: SC
i. The Supreme Court today said that the suspended Chief of BCCI N. Srinivasan's name figures in the inquiry report submitted by the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee on February 10. The apex court said that Srinivasan cannot discharge any function inside BCCI.
ii. The court added that any probe into allegations made by Mudgal committee which enqiured into the IPL scam, against 13 people including N Srinivasan should be done by BCCI itself to maintain its institutional autonomy.
iii. On Tuesday, Srinivasan had appealed to the Supreme Court to reinstate him as BCCI chief. He was removed from the post on March 28. The court said its interim order will stand.
iv. The Apex Court also said that Sundar Raman can continue as the Chief Operating Officer of the Indian Premier League. The interim BCCI president Sunil Gavaskar has recommended that Sundar Raman can continue, the court informed
