General Knowledge Update 40

1.    David Cameron visited India

i. Seeking broadening of bilateral ties, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday said UK and India should be "partners of choice" as both the countries can effectively deal with various challenges like combating terrorism by working closely with each other.
ii. Cameron, who held talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on range of bilateral, regional and international issues, said he was really excited about what both the countries can achieve by enhancing cooperation
iii. Britain and India should be partners of choice; we both want to fight terrorism. The future really excites me about what Britain and India can do together," said Cameron, who arrived here last night on day-long visit.
iv. Speaking on Sachin Tendulkar's last test match, Cameron said, "I have a picture of his at the UK stadium, I hope he likes that as a gift."

2.    Metro Cash & Carry bags CII food safety award

i. Metro Cash & Carry India has bagged the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Award for Food Safety 2013.
ii. The award was conferred on Metro Cash & Carry at the CII’s 8th Food Safety and Quality Summit in New Delhi.
iii. Srinivas Ranganathaiah, Head - Quality Assurance, along with Jyoti Gurung, Senior General Manager - Operations, Arun Methan - General Manager, Quality Assurance and Sudha M R - Quality Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Metro Cash & Carry from Chandramouli, Chairman of The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

3.    HDFC Bank set World Record for Blood collection in a single day

i. Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) Bank set World record for Blood collection in a single day. The blood donation camp organised by HDFC Bank on 6 December 2013 was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
ii. The camp involved 61902 participants with 1115 blood donation camps held across 709 locations in the country. The camp has found a place in Guinness Book of Records as the largest such drive on a single day.
iii. With this HDFC became the first corporate firm to hold such recognition.
iv. Earlier in 2010 Shiv Sena, a political party of Maharashtra, was entered into the Guinness Book of Records for organizing the blood donation camps.

Note: According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a country needs a minimum stock of blood equal to 1% of its population. This means India needs 12 million units of blood.

4.    Exit Polls banned till 4th December

i. The Election Commission has banned the publication and dissemination of exit polls of any kind in the five poll bound states from 11th November till 4th December, when the Assembly elections are over.
ii. The Commission issued these orders and sent them to Chief Electoral Officers of all the five poll-bound states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Delhi.
iii. The exit polls will be banned from 7 AM on 11th November when polling in the first phase of Chhattisgarh starts till 5:30 PM on 4th December when the Delhi Assembly polls end.
iv. The Commission has also banned the publication of results of any opinion polls 48 hours before polling in a state.
v. 14 parties respond on opinion polls, EC for more consultations
vi. The grounds on which the ECI is considering restriction do not get covered by the postulates prescribed in Art 19(2) of the Constitution," BJP said in a letter to the Commission.
