1. President to open N-waste management unit in Kalpakkam
i. President Pranab Mukherjee will Friday inaugurate the nuclear waste immobilisation plant (WIP) of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) at Kalpakkam near here through video conferencing from Mumbai, the research agency said.
ii. The president will participate at the graduation function of BARC training school Friday and give the Homi Bhabha Award to the toppers in each discipline
iii. The facility, apart from vitrification - transforming a liquid into glass - will also handle intermediate nuclear waste, separation of residual uranium from high level liquid waste.
2. Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy visited India
i. Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, on a three-day visit to India, held talks with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday on a wide range of bilateral as well as regional issues.
ii. The focus of the two-hour deliberations was to sustain the momentum in India-Egypt bilateral relations and to expand the interactions to wider areas of regional and international issues of interest, said a statement from the external affairs ministry.
iii. Khurshid informed his Egyptian counterpart of India's approval to establishing a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology at the Al Azhar University in Cairo.
iv. The centre will be set up as a project under the India-Africa Forum Summit. Once the centre is completed in a year, it will be able to train 500 students annually
v. Currently, bilateral trade between India and Egypt stands at $5.4 billion annually.
vi. India is the third largest destination of Egyptian exports ($2.6 billion) and Egypt is the 11th largest destination of Indian exports ($2.9 billion).
3. Indians top foreign investors’ list in Dubai
i. Indians have topped the list of foreign investors in real estate in Dubai, pumping in 1.6 billion dollars during the first quarter of 2014.
ii. According to Dubai Land Department, Indians were at the top spot for international investment, both in terms of the number of investors and the amount of expenditure.
iii. British ranked the second investors followed by Pakistanis. The Dubai Land Department also said United Arab Emirates were ranked as the highest among all investors in terms of the value of investments.
4. Parvinder Sohi Behuria appointed new Secretary General of NHRC
i. Parvinder Sohi Behuria, a Senior IRS officer was appointed as the Secretary General of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on 8 November 2013.
ii. Behuria was appointed in the rank and pay of the secretary. She is the successor of Ashok Sahu, a 1975 batch officer of Indian Economic Service, following his retirement.
iii. She is a 1977 batch IRS (Income Tax) officer. At present, she is the Member (Revenue) in Central Board of Direct Taxes under the Department of Revenue.
